Alternative Spring Break 2015 Applications Available - Due TODAY!

Alternative Spring Break (ASB) is a student group that participates in a one-week, substance-free, service trip during Spring Break in March. Applications are now being accepted for a spring service trip to Baltimore, Maryland. Applications available at http://usm.maine.edu/oel/alternative-school-break.

 

USM's America Reads Program is RecruitingEducation majors encouraged!

America Reads is a program that pays USM students to read to kids in local elementary schools. This is great if you like to work with youth, are looking for a resume booster, networking opportunities, and flexible hours to fit around your school schedule. Must have work study and reliable transportation. If interested please send a paragraph to Rachel.Hasty@maine.edu describing why you would be a good fit.

 

Volunteer Opportunities

 

The Muscular Dystrophy Association of Maine - Portland Lock-Up

Wed, Oct. 1st – Ocean Gateway – Tomorrow!

The muscular Dystrophy Association of Maine serves over 600 families in Maine and covers 43 different types of Muscular Dystrophy including Duchenne MD, ALS and SMA. There will be around 150 community and business leader from the greater Portland area at the Portland Lock-Up. They are looking for people to help with setup, picture taking, social media, registration, food prep and event take down between 8am and 2pm. Maine Youth Action Network - 4th Annual Maine Youth Leadership Summit

Oct. 26th-28th – Augusta Civic Center

The Maine Youth Leadership Summit is a two day event working toward supporting and energizing Maine's youth. This is an opportunity to network with youth and adults interested in supporting youth voice. The days consist of workshops, presentations and activities. Volunteers are encouraged to share their skills and strengths including customer service assistance, taking pictures, setting up workshop technology, offering support to youth and providing first aid. Lift 360 is a Portland-based organization that aims to strengthen Northern New England Communities by strengthening effectiveness of organizations and leaders. The conference is meant to inspire community-minded citizens to action. It features an impressive line-up of morning speakers and afternoon workshops. There is a discount rate for USM students ($35) and staff/faculty ($65).

Iris Network's White Cane Awareness Walk

Sat, October 18th (10am) – Monument Square

The purpose of the walk is to increase awareness of blindness and vision loss in Maine. The walk also serves as a fundraiser for the agency so the Iris Network can continue to provide a variety of vital services to Mainers who are blind and experiencing vision loss throughout Maine. All proceeds provide training, education, and support for people with vision loss and blindness. Registration cost is $15/adult and $5/children under twelve. GrowSmart Maine Summit 2014 - The Dollars and $ense of Smart Growth

Tues, October 21st (8am-5pm) – Augusta Civic Center

There will be over 500 folks from across the state to inform, discuss and inspire towards improving Maine's economy, revitalizing our downtowns and conserving our working and natural landscapes. If you are currently enrolled in a Maine College or University you can attend at a student rate of $25 with the discount code. Free registration is also offered in exchange for volunteering. Habitat for Humanity of Greater Portland was founded in 1985. Their commitment is to developing and uplifting families and communities. The organization has expanded to now serve the 28 communities in the greater Portland area. In nearly three decades they've built 57 homes, served more than 200 people with stable, affordable housing, engaged hundreds of business and civic partners, and enlisted the support of thousands of volunteers. Habitat for Humanity of Greater Portland is a homeownership program where the homeowners are just as invested in the completion of their home through minimal funds and sweat-equity. Volunteers are welcome for one day or a regularly scheduled time. CONFERENCE and EXPO – "The North American Passive House Networks' 2014 Conference and Expo

Sept. 22nd-23rd – Holiday Inn Portland-by the Bay – TODAY!

The Expo will showcase over 30 industry leaders. There are only a few spots open for volunteers. The Expo will have world-wide vendors who specialize in Passive House products, they are knowledgeable and love to teach students. This is free and worthwhile, even if you can't volunteer! Fight Back Festival – great for student groups!

Sat, Sept. 27th – Pineland Farms

This is the Cancer Community Center's largest annual fundraiser. With a goal of raising over $110,000, they are in need of 250 volunteers to make the day run smoothly. They need help in the week leading up to the event (9/22-9/26) for setup and on the day of the festival for registration, run/bike route support & cheerleaders, finish line support, food preparation & cooking, clean up, kid's activities, parking & traffic control, and more. Each volunteer gets a t-shirt, full BBQ meal, and craft beer (21+, ID required). More info: http://cancercommunitycenter.org/special-events/fight-back-festival/

World Tourism Day – Tour of Dover-Foxcroft and Stutzman Farm CafĂ©

Sat, Sept. 27th (8am-5pm)

This trip is guided by USM's Dr. Tracy Michaud Stutzman and brings you up to her hometown of Dover-Foxcroft and family farm for a tour and lunch. The van will pick you up at 8am on Saturday, Sept. 27th in front of Woodbury Campus Center and drop you back at 5pm. A lovely drive at the beginning of leaf peeping season! It is $15 per person (covers van transportation and food) and open to anyone in the USM community. Bring your significant other or friends! Free if you drive up on your own! LearningWorks has played an important role in our community since 1967. Formerly Portland West, the organization centered its attention on acquiring housing in the West End of Portland for low income families. Believing that education is the best path out of poverty, the LearningWorks mission focuses on education and mental health programs. Some include English Language Program, Service Works, Study Center, and Youth Building Alternatives. USM has many students who volunteer for LearningWorks each year. LearningWorks offers a variety of opportunities for college students to contribute to their community. Portland Mentoring Alliance

The Portland Mentoring Alliance was established in 1992. During the past nineteen years, volunteers from businesses, organizations and colleges have been matched with Portland High School students to create supportive mentoring relationships .The program focuses on academic success, post-secondary planning and socialization as experienced in a one-on-one relationship. USM has many students and some staff and faculty who volunteer for PMA each year. Mentoring is a chance to contribute to the community by having an impact on a young person's life. The commitment is one hour each week for the academic year. If you are interested, contact the Office of Engaged Learning.

Celebrate World Tourism Day-Tour Stutzman Farm Cafe and Dover-Foxcroft

Come tour Dover-Foxcroft and Stutzman Farm Cafe ***Winner of Yankee Magazine's 2014 Best Farm to Fork Award*** to celebrate World Tourism Day on Saturday September 27, 2014!
Sponsored by: USM Tourism and Hospitality Student Organization

This trip is guided by USM's Dr. Tracy Michaud Stutzman and brings you up to her hometown of Dover-Foxcroft and family farm for a tour and lunch. Van picks you up at 8 am on Saturday, Sept. 27th in front of Woodbury Campus Center and drops you back there again at 5pm. A lovely drive at the beginning of leaf peeping season!

$15 per person (covers van transportation and food). Open to anyone in the USM community. Bring your significant other or friends!

World Tourism Day,September 27th, is a global observance to highlight tourism's social, cultural, political and economic value. This year's Theme: Tourism and Community Development focuses on the ability of tourism to empower people and provide them with skills to achieve change in their local communities.

During your journey you will visit Stutzman Farm and see first-hand how they successfully engage visitors. Eat lunch (covered in fee) at the award winning cafe and listen to some great local live music. You also will tour downtown Dover-Foxcroft and the Center Theater-home of the famous Maine Whoopie Pie Festival (yes, you will get a complimentary whoopie pie!)

Learn about how tourism plays an important role in community development and how this small rural Maine town and farm is transforming itself!
