Congratulations to the students of USM's Alternative Spring Break group, who spent their spring break traveling to the New Jersey shore to participate in the ongoing clean up following the devastation of Super Storm Sandy! Thanks to all who helped the students in their fund raising by donating bottles, purchasing baked goods, or participating in the annual silent auction.
Every year, at colleges and universities all over the country and here at USM, students work for months in advance of spring break to raise the money to send themselves not to a beach but to a community dealing with crisis recovery or persistent poverty. Communities are helped and students' lives are changed. USM's ASB program has existed since 2000, but has remained small. The group intends to begin promoting the program and recruiting participants earlier next year in hopes of extending this opportunity to more students in Spring 2014. I hope you'll help by talking it up and encouraging students you know to consider participating. -ATM
