USM's America Reads Program is RecruitingPAID! Education Majors Encouraged!

America Reads is a program that pays USM students to read to kids in local elementary schools. This is great if you like to work with youth, are looking for a resume booster, networking opportunities, and flexible hours to fit around your school schedule. Must have work study and reliable transportation. If interested, please email Rachel.Hasty@maine.edu for more details. Education Majors are encouraged to apply.

Take Action Portland – Facilitation of the Annual Fall Festival at Wolfe's Neck Farm

Sat, Oct. 11th – Wolfe's Neck Farm, Freeport – Saturday!

Join TAP as they assist Wolfe's Neck Farm with their annual Fall Festival! This wholesome festival features activities, demonstrations, live music, hay bale climbing, animals, tasty local food and more. Volunteers would be helping sell pumpkins, running arts and craft tables, assisting with animal interaction areas and more. This is a great way to engage with your community, meet new people, and learn more about the programs at Wolfe's Neck Farm. RSVP to sam@takeactionportland.com.

Portland High School – English Language Learner (ELL) Volunteers

Portland High School needs volunteers to assist multilingual students in their academic subjects and acquisition of English language skills. The time commitment can be as little to one hour per week. There are two immediate needs. The first is supporting multilingual students who have transitioned from ELL classes into college prep courses (flexible). The second need is assisting lower level ELL students with their acquisition of England and basic academic subjects (Tues and Thurs 2:15-3:45pm). Both provide an opportunity to get to know students from different countries and cultures. If interested please contact Glenn Nerbak at nerbak@me.com or call 207 842 5358.

 

Maine Youth Action Network - 4th Annual Maine Youth Leadership Summit

Oct. 26th-28th – Augusta Civic Center

The Maine Youth Leadership Summit is a two day event working toward supporting and energizing Maine's youth. This is an opportunity to network with youth and adults interested in supporting youth voice. The days consist of workshops, presentations and activities. Volunteers are encouraged to share their skills and strengths including customer service assistance, taking pictures, setting up workshop technology, offering support to youth and providing first aid. The Maine State Chamber of Commerce – Gubernatorial Forum – Three Spots Left!

Wed, Oct. 15th (4:30-8:30pm) – Augusta Civic Center

The Maine State Chamber of Commerce has seats available for 3 USM students at their live, televised Gubernatorial Forum hosted with Channel 6 and WLBZ 2. The Maine State Chamber of Commerce works with businesses who sponsor student tables at their annual dinner. Their goal is to integrate students with the business professionals who attend the event. Iris Network's White Cane Awareness Walk

Sat, Oct. 18th (10am) – Monument Square

The purpose of the walk is to increase awareness of blindness and vision loss in Maine. The walk also serves as a fundraiser for the agency so the Iris Network can continue to provide a variety of vital services to Mainers who are blind and experiencing vision loss throughout Maine. All proceeds provide training, education, and support for people with vision loss and blindness. Registration cost is $15/adult and $5/children under twelve. GrowSmart Maine Summit 2014 - The Dollars and $ense of Smart Growth

Tues, Oc. 21st (8am-5pm) – Augusta Civic Center

There will be over 500 folks from across the state to inform, discuss and inspire towards improving Maine's economy, revitalizing our downtowns and conserving our working and natural landscapes. If you are currently enrolled in a Maine College or University you can attend at a student rate of $25 with the discount code. Free registration is also offered in exchange for volunteering. The Boys and Girls Clubs of Southern Maine

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Southern Maine have provided home and opportunity to tens of thousands of young people for more than a century. Their programs and services promote and enhance the development of boys and girls by instilling a sense of competence, usefulness, belonging and influence. Boys and Girls Clubs are a safe place to learn and grow while having fun. The mission is to inspire and enable all young people to reach their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens.
