Join ConnectEd and Maine Hunger Initiative!

ConnectEd needs volunteers for their Summer Meals Program!

Summer months can prove especially challenging for some families as children, who were formerly kept fed and engaged in public schools, return home and often lack sufficient food and activities. As a result, Summer Meals programs exist to provide free lunches and some educational enrichment to these students at fixed locations across the Portland area. The main Summer Meals program is operated by Preble Street's Maine Hunger Initiative. By feeding children who might otherwise be food insecure or hungry, the atrophy of learning which typically occurs for low-income students over the summer months can be abated, stress can be removed from the families which struggle to feed their children three meals a day, and participants contribute to a deepened sense of connectedness to the community. The sites typically operate Monday through Friday for one hour a day around lunchtime, running late June to early August.
