We are pleased to announce the availability of a full time AmeriCorps VISTA position in our office next year, 2011-2012, AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS COORDINATOR. From the position description: "The VISTA will engage USM students in providing after school support to K-12 students in neighborhood and school-based programs for persistence and success in school and aspirations for higher education." The role involves recruiting, placing and supporting USM students in service roles with Portland Housing Authority Study Centers, LearningWorks Afterschool Programs, Boys and Girls Clubs, and the Make It Happen! program of Portland Schools' Multilingual & Multicultural Center. Compensation includes a modest living allowance, relocation allowance, and an Education Award on successful completion of a year-long term of service.

It is our hope that this professional will be one of three whose positions are funded through Maine Campus Compact by the Corporation for National and Community Service. The other two, MENTORING COORDINATOR and COMMUNITY SERVICE LEARNING COORDINATOR, are not yet approved for application, but we await word any time.
