Media Studies Program Service Learning Practicum Public Presentations Tomorrow Night

Please join the students of the USM Media Studies Program Service Learning Practicum for an evening of public presentations of the work they have done this semester for non-profit organizations in the Greater Portland area.  This event will take place in Talbot Auditorium on Tuesday, April 27th, at 7:00.  (The sponsoring partners for this year's practicum are listed below*.)

Relay for Life @ USM

This is a unique and fantastic opportunity to get involved in!

 

Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society's signature activity. It is a unique event that offers communities an opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer. From 6 p.m. on May 7th to 6 a.m. on May 8th, students will camp out in the Gorham Field House in this 12-hour overnight event. Teams take turns walking around the track throughout the night to CELEBRATE survivors, to REMEMBER loved ones lost, and to FIGHT BACK so that one day no one will have to hear the words "you have cancer". Support Thinking Matters!

Thinking Matters  needs our help!  Here's an opportunity to serve within the USM community:

 

Next Friday, April 30th, USM's annual symposium of student research, scholarship, and creative activity will present the work of dozens of students in poster and oral sessions throughout the day.  The planning committee depends upon volunteer support on the "day of," to help with set up and break down and a whole lot in between.  Here's a list of times and tasks, all with support from the Thinking Matters planning committee:

MORNING SET UP:  600 am – 730 am - Sullivan Gym

Responsible for Gym Set up (Tables, Tents, etc), Ice Tent and Sandwich Board Set up

Once Room is set up, be available for directions to students coming in to set up poster

 

INFORMATION TABLE:  730 am - 830 am - Sullivan Gym

Directions and answer questions, provided with directory and lay out of the room, 6 volunteers will be in room to assist

 

POSTER TABLE:  730 am – 830 am  - Sullivan Gym – Side with Lunch Tables

Be available to provide students with posters not picked up and answer questions

 

INFORMATION TABLE:  800 am - 1200 pm - Sullivan Gym

Assist with Student, Guest and Visitors with Questions and Directions

Table filled with Booklets, Directories and Maps

 

GYM CLEAN UP/PICK UP CREW:  12 pm – 1230 pm - Sullivan Gym

 

ORAL SESSION SET UP:  11am-12pm

Pick up Easels from ITMS, Set up Directional Signage in front of rooms, place books in rooms, contact information in rooms

 

ORAL SESSION VOLUNTEERS:  12:15-1:30, 1:35-2:50, 3:00-4:15

Responsible for filling the water jugs, answers questions, directing traffic, contacting ITMS or Volunteer Coordinator(s), moderating rooms who do not have faculty mentors in them

 

OVER ALL CLEAN UP CREW:  4:15 – 5:00 PM - Oral Session Rooms and Sullivan Gym

As an added incentive, I'll remind us all that Civic Matters, our annual symposium of student community engaged work, was born as a stream within Thinking Matters and became an independent civic engagement event last year with the strong support of the Thinking Matters planning committee.  Here's an opportunity for us to put our gratitude for that lineage into action!

Speaker on Sustainable Economic Development in Nicaragua

Please join me in welcoming Sarah Junkin Woodard, representative of the Center for Development in Central America, to USM for a talk titled 'Partnering with the Poor: Building Lives and Sustainable Communities in Nicaragua'.

 

This Thursday, April 22, 5pm at the Woodbury Campus Center Amphitheater

 

Need a gift for Mother's Day or just want to support a good cause?

There will also be crafts and art made by Nicaraguan artisans for sale in the Woodbury Cafe from 11a-2p, Thursday April 22.

 

Sarah comes to us from the CDCA, the Nicaraguan project of the Jubilee House Community, a non-profit organization originally started in North Carolina. Working in Nicaragua since 1994, the CDCA seeks to respond to human needs created by poverty in a nation where 45% of the population lives on less than $1 per day. The CDCA is working toward freedom from poverty by helping communities become self-sufficient, sustainable, democratic entities. The CDCA focuses its work in the areas of sustainable economic development, organic agriculture, appropriate technology, and health care. The sale of crafts goes back to Nicaragua to fund the project. This Week In Service

Hello Everyone,

Thanks to those of you who participated in USM's First Annual Day of Service this past Friday! Over 120 students participated in projects ranging from community gardens and classrooms to cleaning out Preble Street Soup Kitchen. We hope everyone enjoyed themselves and if you have any feedback we would love to hear it.

Upcoming Projects!

Friday 4/23

Portland Trails: This one got rained out last Friday for the Day of Service, so we are doing it this Friday instead when the weather should be nice from 11:30 to 3:30. We can easily use up to twenty students. There is a lot of weeding and mulching to do along with some trail repair and resurfacing. What to bring: Sturdy shoes and water. Urban Clean-Up: We will be teaming with MECA to clean up the streets of Portland. There will be a free pancake breakfast for all volunteers at MECA starting at 10am and the clean-up will commence around 11am. Contact AmeriCorps Volunteer Jess Sheldon at jsheldon@meca.edu to get involved.

Potato Planting Day

Potato Planting Day is Rippling Waters Organic Farm's biggest volunteer day of the year! On Saturday, April 24, from 10a-1p, volunteers will be convening on five acres of land for a single purpose: the spud. We will plant many types of tubers in a few different fields. It's a great day to meet and mingle while helping out your local organic farmer and getting some quality outdoors time with the soil. Work starts at 10 AM sharp, and there's a potluck lunch at noon, so bring a small veggie dish to share if you want to show off your culinary skills.

Thinking Matters is once again approaching quickly. Last year, ewut out a call for volunteers for the day of Thinking Matters and got great response. This year it will be on Friday, April 30th. Sierra Club Energy Efficiency Canvassing

We are looking for 60 volunteers who have an interest in reaching out to our communities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency. You will take a 2 hour weatherization/energy-efficiency course (on-line from April 30- May 10) and then canvass for 4 hours on May 15th (9am to 1pm) in Portland or Camden. Afterwards, there will be a celebration lunch provided. Walk away with knowledge and skills about weatherization and energy conservation! Camp Sebago

Each year The Salvation Army sends 150 underprivileged kids to Camp Sebago in Standish, ME (www.campsebago.org). They need 6 volunteers to help out at the 2010 Camp Rally on April 23^rd from 9a to noon, providing parents with information about camp and to register the kids. While the parents are going through the registration process, the kids are in our gym playing games, having snacks and winning prizes. It's a fun event and gives volunteers the opportunity to work with families in need. If interested, contact Danielle Gudroe at 207.774.4172 ext. 265

Ice Cream Fundraiser

Celebrate the arrival of Spring with some tasty ice cream.

 

Tomorrow at the Woodbury Campus Center in support of the MultiCultural Student Graduation, the student association will be selling ice cream to fund-raise for the organization and for their graduation celebration.
